Friends of the Children has recently expanded to Los Angeles and we are looking for a passionate, committed Development and Communications Director to take the lead in coordinating, implementing, and sustaining our development efforts in Los Angeles.  Our model is proven to break the cycle of generational poverty for children who face the highest risks by providing paid professional mentors to thousands of youth across the country.  

The ideal candidate will have a smart head for business, and be an innovative leader deeply connected to the communities we serve.  He or she will be proactive, results-driven, and will use their passion, experience, communication skills and entrepreneurial spirit to help us build a first-class Development Department that provides the financial support we need to meet our ambitious scaling plan and to serve as many children as possible.

At Friends of the Children – Los Angeles you get to think globally and act locally. We are a new chapter within a growing, established national network of 14 sites, including four sites in Oregon (Portland, Gresham, Klamath Falls, and Central Oregon); Austin, TX; Boston, MA; Charlotte, NC; Chicago, IL; Harlem and the South Bronx, NY; San Francisco, CA; Seattle, WA; and Cornwall, UK.  As Los Angeles Program Director, you’ll receive expert support from our National team, which is located in Portland, OR.  You’ll also work with a talented team of leaders from the other sites, who collaborate to support the award-winning National scaling plan.

Basic Function/Position Objective:

Our Development and Communications Director will be a member of our Senior Management team and will work alongside our Executive Director and Board of Directors, with support from our Professional Mentors and in coordination with the rest of the Friends network, to actualize the organization’s goals and values.  

Essential Functions/Core Job Accountabilities:

  •  Revenue Generation 50%
    • Advise ED and Board about revenue targets and achievements
    • Devise and refine our development plan, systems and strategies as necessary to bring our fundraising to the next level 
    • Work effectively -- with ED, with Board, and independently -- to identify and cultivate major donors 
    • Identify and develop foundation and corporate donors 
    • Research and pursue innovative funding streams 
    • Plan and actualize fundraising events
    • Serve as an effective, compelling spokesperson for the organization 
    • Develop and maintain knowledge of relevant local and national issues 
    • Develop and maintain relationships with local and national news outlets 
    • Further develop and implement our social and traditional media plan to generate brand awareness and revenue 
    • Further develop periodic newsletters, reports and direct mail campaigns 
    • Collaborate with ED and with the National network to maximize scaling efforts
    • Ensure that all messaging aligns with organizational standards and values. 
    • Model passion for the mission, professionalism, collaboration, hard work, and high ethical standards 
    • Actively participate as member of Senior Management in all aspects of planning, budgeting, and managing 
    • Effectively communicate organization’s goals and values, both internally and externally 
    • Help organize and coordinate efforts of Young Professionals Board

    • Experience securing significant major donor and corporate gifts 
    • Familiarity with all parts of L.A. County and national philanthropic, governmental, and business communities
    • Perform prospect research on foundations and corporations to evaluate prospects for corporate and foundation grants.
    • Responsible for conducting the full range of activities required to prepare, submit, and manage grant proposals to foundation and corporate sources.
    • Work with finance to gather information necessary to report to corporate/foundation funders on current grant programs.
    • Comply with all grant reporting as required by foundation/corporate donors.
    • Provide stewardship to current donors, including work with Grants & Research Manager to provide regular written updates (newsletters etc) to corporate and foundation donors.
    • Understanding of institutional history and programs.
    • Make appointments for ED with foundation officers and other prospects, arrange for onsite tours for supporters (foundation officers, foundation trustees).
    • Maintain current records in database and in paper files, including grant tracking and reporting.
    • Track statistics relevant to development and provide department with written materials necessary for donor stewardship (visitor number and diversity, educational program attendance, etc).
    • Work with Grants & Research Manager to provide development input for all written institutional materials (including Annual Report).
    • Demonstrated ability to cultivate and sustain funder relationships at senior levels 
    • History of generating appointments, making the ask, and closing the solicitation 
    • Facility with all portions of grant-making of generating appointments, making the ask, and closing the solicitation 
    • Growth mindset and commitment to increasing revenue to serve more children 
    • Enthusiasm for articulating our mission and model to donors and community members 
    • Effective supervisory, management, and staff development skills 
    • A bachelor’s degree 
    • At least five years of experience in non-profit development, in progressively responsible roles
    • Experience managing multi-platform marketing and fundraising campaigns 
    • Professional experience with social media and digital marketing 
    • Experience with one or more fundraising database programs, preferably eTapestry    

Communications 40%

  • Develop and maintain knowledge of relevant local and national issues.
  • Serve as effective, compelling spokesperson for the organization.
  • Develop and implement media plan to generate brand awareness and revenue.
  • Improve and/or institute periodic newsletters and reports, direct mail and digital marketing campaigns.
  • Develop, execute, and maintain digital and social media strategy.  Ensure effective and efficient use of new media.

Leadership 10%
